In February 2016, Lake Shore Gold partnered with the music non-profit, Through Education Music Provides Opportunity, to support school music education for high school and vocational school students. The course improved students’ music skills and explored careers in the music industry.
Throughout the 5-month course, students learned from music professionals in areas such as songwriting, music theory, marketing, finance, copyright law and entrepreneurship. In combination with traditional teaching methods, students wrote and composed four original songs—“We Are Golden”, “Freedom”, “I’m Alive” and “Here for You”. Students traveled to Toronto to record their songs at the Coalition Music facility, gaining experience at a professional studio and receiving guidance from music producers. Students performed their original songs at a sold-out show in Timmins to conclude the course. “Students now understand how to transfer their musical hobby into a music career. The confidence and skills that students learned will also transfer to other professions,” said Lake Shore Gold’s CSR Director, Tom Laughren. “This program has positive local impact and Lake Shore Gold will continue to sponsor the music course next semester.”
